Tell me about seeds

I no nothing about seeds. I have searched, but all I find is above my knowledge level.
1) What is an Heiloom Seed?
2) What is the dif between types of seeds?
3) What and how to store seeds for SHTF?
4) How do you get your seeds to produce more seeds, season after season?
5) Do you have any good links to learn from?
6) Best book for learing this stuff and how to garden.

Thanks,

1) Heirloom is a somewhat overused term. However, most conservatively it means a non-hybrid plant. That means that so long as you control cross-pollination, seeds that you collect from this plant will BREED TRUE, meaning that they will be essentially the same as the parent plant.
2) There's hybrid and non-hybrid. Beyond that there's genetically modified.
3) To store seeds for SHTF you need to identify how much you'll need to grow, what to grow, etc. Then get those fresh seeds, dehydrate them to between 5-8% moisture, seal them in an airtight container and freeze.
4) For learning how to produce more seeds season after season, buy the book "Seed to Seed: Seed Saving and Growing Techniques for Vegetable Gardeners" by Suzanne Ashworth.
5) Gardenweb has a forum dedicated to seed saving, along with forums dedicated to various aspects of gardening.
6) I'd start with "Square Foot Gardening" by Mel Bartholomew. After that, I heavily rely on "Growing Fruits and Vegetables Organically" by Rodale Books.

Well....they start out nice & small, then you stick them in the ground and hope they get nice & big.

OK most commercial seeds have been GENETICALLY ALTERED so they wont be able to reproduce a growable seed themselves thanks to giant corporate interests. You friends and mine at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Rockerfeller's have taken it upon themselves to archive a seed bank in the Artic to try to preserve natural seeds for future generations in case the GENIOUSES at Monsanto get it wrong one year and there is a massive crop failure and we have to start all over again. Here is a link for the Gates project link: http://prorev.com/2007/12/bill-gates...ckefeller.html
